How to easily move your website and email to Simply.com: order, backup, upload, set up mail and point your domain.
It is generally easy to switch web hosting providers. Just follow these general steps to ensure a correct and trouble‑free transfer of your website and e‑mail.
Order a web hosting plan from Simply.com for the domain you wish to transfer. Complete the order through our website.
Take a backup of your website and e‑mail with your current provider. This usually involves downloading all files from your current provider and also exporting any databases you may have. Contact your current provider if you are unsure how to access this data.
Create your e‑mail accounts in Simply.com’s control panel. This is done under the “Mail Administration” menu item.
Upload your website backup to Simply.com’s servers. See your welcome e‑mail for instructions and details. Change any database connections so that you now connect to your database at Simply.com. Then use the temporary URL to verify that the site works as it should; you will find the URL in your welcome e‑mail.
Approve the domain transfer (re‑delegation). You have received instructions from us about this via e‑mail.
Update the settings in the e‑mail clients you use so that they are now correctly configured to send and receive mail via Simply.com’s mail servers. See your welcome e‑mail for instructions and details.
Once the domain re‑delegation is complete, your website should now be fully functional on your new Simply.com web hosting plan.
Remember to cancel any subscription with your previous provider.
To make it easier to import data to your Simply.com web hosting plan, we have created a number of tools.
Plugins such as Duplicator, Akeeba, etc. work fine with us. These plugins can easily transfer WordPress and Joomla installations from one provider to another. We generally recommend Akeeba Core (free): https://www.akeebabackup.com/
Through our File Manager you can import data from the FTP server of your previous provider.
In our MySQL administration you can import your MySQL databases from a remote server. This requires that the previous provider has remote access to their MySQL server enabled. Alternatively you can also import the database from a .sql file via phpMyAdmin.
You can import e‑mail via IMAP through our Mail Administration. This is done by clicking “Import mail”. Under “Import external mail” you then enter the mail server, username and password. You need to obtain these details from your previous provider, or find them on their support pages.
Using these tools is, of course, optional; you can also export and import data with various FTP, MySQL and mail programmes.
