Account sharing and developer access

As the owner of a web space, you may need to grant others access to your account and web space. This could be a developer or someone to help manage your domain and web space. At Simply.com it's easy and secure to do this through our user system. This article explains how you can do this and what things you need to be aware of to protect yourself from problems.

User access

At Simply.com you have your account, which can contain one or more domains and web spaces. To access your account, you use your login, also called Simply.com user.
Multiple users can have access to an account, allowing for collaborative domain administration. User access for an account is managed in the control panel by selecting Account in the menu on the left and then Account management.

Under the "Users" heading, you can see which individuals have access to the account.. Additionally, there's an "Add user access" button where you can send user invitations to new users or grant existing users access to the account

Best practices

  • Never grant access to a user you don't trust.
  • Do not share your login with others.
  • All users have the same rights regarding account and product management.
  • Remember to remove user access again if a person only needs temporary access.
  • All users have access to the product password (FTP, MySQL etc.). Always change the code if you remove a user access.
  • All users have access to all products on the account. If a person only needs access to a single domain, we recommend transferring that domain to its own account, which the person can then be granted access to. You can read how to transfer a product in our FAQ
  • To best secure your own login, we strongly recommend activating 2-factor login for your user. We support 2-factor login via authenticator apps such as Authy, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator etc. 2-factor login is activated in the control panel by clicking on your username in the top right and selecting "User Profile." On the subsequent page, there's a button to activate 2-factor under the "Security" heading.

Other access

In some cases, a person may not need full access to your Simply.com account. For example, a developer who only needs FTP access, or needs a login to WordPress (or similar CMS).

FTP login

FTP provides access to upload, delete, and edit files for your website. Some web developers may only need to log in to FTP to make the necessary changes.
If that's the case, they just need the username and FTP password. Each web host has one FTP login. You can find the login details in the control panel under Administration -> Login details after selecting your web space.
If you have shared FTP details with a developer and they are finished using it, we recommend changing the password. This is done under Administration -> Change password.

WordPress access

WordPress sites have their own separate user system. If you need to make changes to a WordPress site, it's usually enough to create a user in WordPress, then you can get access to create new posts and pages or change the site design.
To grant access to a WordPress site, you need to log in to the WordPress administration. Under Users in the menu, you can select Add New. Here, you fill in the username, email, password, etc., to create the new login, which can then be given to the person.
We recommend updating the password for your own first time you log in.

WordPress has a number of different roles that grant access to different things on the site. The "Admin" role has full access, while "Author," for example, can only add and manage posts. You can read about various roles in WordPress
