Setting up FTP and FTPS

Set up FTP with ftp.simply.com on port 21 and log in via the Control Panel; FTPS requires Explicit SSL, with max 8 concurrent connections and one FTP account.

FTP at Simply.com uses the following details:

Hostname: ftp.simply.com (port 21)
Username: Your username
Password: The password for your product
Passive transfer: Yes

You can find all the information you need in your Simply.com control panel.

FTPS

FTPS (FTP Secure / FTP-SSL) can be used to encrypt data sent over the FTP protocol. This applies to both login details and file data.

To establish a connection, it is necessary to set your FTP program to use "Explicit SSL" over port 21.

Limitations

On all products, there is a limit of 8 simultaneous connections per user.

Some FTP programs may set up multiple connections to optimise speed; this is particularly a problem with the programs CuteFTP and FileZilla.
If too many connections are made, we simply recommend waiting for the connections to close automatically, and then, if necessary, setting your FTP program to use fewer, or just one, simultaneous connections.

There is no speed limit on FTP transfers.

More than one FTP account?

One FTP account is included with a webhosting plan. Unfortunately, it is not possible to have more FTP logins than this.

If you need an additional FTP login, for example to have an upload folder, we recommend instead that you download or develop a PHP or ASP script for this. See e.g. http://phpfileuploader.com/

It is a misconception to believe that extra FTP accounts are a guarantee of extra security. A person with an extra FTP account will be able to circumvent the restrictions of such an account relatively easily, including through PHP scripts.
