Antispam

For every single email you receive, our anti‑spam system will assess how likely it is that the email is spam.
This is done by looking at all elements of the email you receive, from content, structure and headers to the sending server and address. The system also uses past history for the sender’s address and the sending server.

Based on the system’s analysis, each email will receive a spam score. A general rule is:

  • If the score is below 2, it is unlikely that the email is spam.
  • If the score is above, for example, 6, it is very likely that the email is spam.

You can view the spam score, as well as which factors contributed to it, in the headers of each individual email you receive, and under Anti‑spam in our Mail Administration, by hovering over the spam score.

In our Mail Administration you can also configure how aggressively you want the filter to act on your incoming mail. You can therefore set the system to place an email in quarantine, or move it to the “Spam” folder, if it exceeds a given score.

Through our Webmail it is possible to train the spam filter to recognise emails as spam. This is done using the “Spam” button. Note that this does not automatically mean that emails from the same sender or with the same content will always be blocked in the future; this can be managed with Filtering Rules.

Spam folder

If the anti‑spam system deems an email most likely to be spam, it will be placed in the “Spam” folder, which you can access either via Webmail or your email client. Here you can always mark the email as “Not spam”, so it is moved to the inbox. This also improves delivery of emails from that sender, reducing the chance they end up in the spam folder in the future. Emails in the spam folder are automatically deleted after 30 days.

Quarantine

If the anti‑spam system determines that it has found a definite spam email, it blocks the receipt of the email and places the email in quarantine. You can release the email from quarantine via our control panel, or by receiving a daily email with a list of all emails in quarantine. This is configured under Anti‑spam in our Control Panel. You can also log in directly and release e‑mails for a single email address via our website here https://www.simply.com/mail/quarantine/

For high spam score

As a general rule, emails are placed in quarantine if the anti‑spam system deems them a definite spam email. However, if an email’s sending domain, according to the spam system, has such a high spam score, it may fail to appear at all. Emails with a spam score of 20 or higher are typically rejected entirely and therefore will not be found in quarantine.

Filtering rules

You can create filtering rules that block or allow individual email addresses or entire domains. You can also view an overview of your most recently received emails and the scores they received. These scores can help you decide how to configure your settings. With a single click you can add the sender to your blocked or approved email addresses.

If you mark an email as “Not spam” through our Webmail, the sender’s deliverability is automatically improved going forward.

Newsletters

As a general rule, our anti‑spam system does not treat newsletters as spam. If you have subscribed to a newsletter and no longer wish to receive it, you should unsubscribe in the usual way. Typically, “good” newsletters that honour unsubscribe requests pass through our spam filter.
